Hebridean Woolshed Opening Hours
This website is of course open 24/365 for online purchases.
* We use an automated call screening service. If you’re asked to, state your name, then press #.
The ‘garden shop’ – the real world shop in the walled garden! – is generally open for sales of produce eggs, and preserves from 9am to 5pm daily, April to September. You may find us open outside those times. That said, there are only two of us and we may have to go off to clean our holiday lets, go shopping … or even take a rare half-day off! – so those hours are just a guide – we may be open earlier or later … or not at all. If you’re planning a special visit, we suggest you contact us first.
Hand-spun Yarns: Colours and Quantities
It’s impossible to accurately represent on a website the subtle colours of natural wools and dyes, and of course impossible to convey the lustre, handle and other characteristics. If you’ve any queries, please contact us
For hand-spun Double Knit [DK], one 75g skein is usually sufficient for a simple Beanie-style hat. Two skeins will be sufficient for a ladies’ light scarf.
The average weight of all skeins of any one colour will be at least 75g.
Our Hebridean, Cheviot (and blended) yarns in 50g balls are spun for us at specialist ‘micro-mills’, and this means that the colour and thickness are consistent over much larger production runs – or batches. Each batch is uniform in thickness : colour and character are consistent too, though will vary somewhat from one year to another, reflecting the individual characteristics of the sheep contributing their wools to the batch.
- 2-ply DK and 3-ply Aran weight yarns : these are perfect for traditional ‘country pursuits’ warmwear – pullovers, etc.
- 2-ply DK Lambswool yarns : these knit up beautifully into lace shawls, light cardigans, and other warmwear
All mill-spun yarns are sold in 50g balls, with a yarn length of approximately 175m for DK, and 95m for the Aran.
Recommended needle sizes are 3.75mm for DK, 4.50mm for Aran.
If, part-way through your project, it looks like you’re going to be short, get in touch with us as soon as possible, so that we can if possible put wool from the sale lot aside for you.
Both yarns and knitwear should be washed gently in luke-warm water using soft soap flakes or a liquid soap for delicates. Do not rub! To dry, squeeze gently and/or spin – do not wring. Lay flat in a warm airy place, gently pull into shape.
