Natural Wools

Introducing the Hebridean Woolshed’s range of A selection of Mill-spun Natural Wools. The Hebridean Woolshed, Isle of South UistNatural Wools

Our undyed pure new wools come from the Hebridean islands of Eriskay and South Uist – from our own Hebridean sheep, and from the Cheviot sheep of our neighbours.

We sort and grade fleeces according to purity of colour, fineness and softness, and send them away to specialist ‘micro-mills’ around the UK. Most of the wool comes back to us carded and spun into yarns of various styles of yarn for knitting, crocheting or weaving.

Hand-spinners and felters may also be interested in our Rovings ⇒

Hebridean Wool

All of the Hebridean wool we produce comes from our An Gàrradh Mòr flock of registered pedigree Hebridean sheep, who live on our croft in the island of Eriskay.

The lambswool Hebridean yarn has a consistent ‘bitter chocolate’ colour – almost ‘solid’ black, and a semi-lustrous sheen. It’s suitable for hats, gloves, and scarves, jerkins – items more likely to be in contact with exposed skin.

Our other Hebridean yarns are characteristic of older Hebridean sheep: charcoal black with whisps of silvery fibres (characteristic of ewes that have already had lambs) and the burnished bronze colour of the weathered tips, giving the yarn a ‘heathery’ character. These wools are suited for country warmwear – pullovers, cardigans, jackets, and such like – worn over other clothing.

Hebridean wool is available as Mill-spun yarns of various types – all in 50g balls, and as Roving, sold in multiples of 100g.

Cheviot Wool

The Cheviot wool comes from the Cheviot sheep of our neighbours, both in South Uist and in Eriskay.

Cheviot is a fine, semi-lustrous wool, cream white – well-suited to durable warm-wear of all kinds.

Te Cheviot yarns are finished in such a way as to make them ideal for home dyeing without the need for pre-washing or scouring: indeed we ourselves use them for our plant-dyed wools.

Cheviot wool is available as mill-spun yarn in two diffeent weights: 2-ply DK ; 3-ply Aran.

Beinn Sgiathan – A blend of Hebridean & Cheviot Wools

This blend of Hebridean and Cheviot is named after the highest hill in the island of Eriskay : Beinn Sgiathan looms over our croft, and is where our Hebridean sheep spend the summer months, and where they mix freely with the Cheviots (and other breeds) belonging to our neighbours.  Bringing together the wool from both flocks has, by some kind of alchemy, resulted in a yarn that is much more than the some of its two parts. This is no sober, drab, bland, characterless grey. This grey is tumbling rocks, speckled with lichens ; it’s wind-torn seas, it’s scudding storm clouds, the ancient high walls of our own kitchen garden.

Beinn Sgiathan is available as mill-spun yarn in the following weights : 3-ply Aran
